Introduction

Zheng “James” Peng received a B.S degree in Computer Science and a B.S. degree in Control Science from Zhejiang University in 2002, and a Master's Degree in 2005 from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Now, he is pursuing higher education towards PhD and MBA at University of Connecticut in the United States.

He joined the Underwater Sensor Network (UWSN) Lab, which is led by Associate Professor Jun-Hong Cui in the fall of 2005. Since then, he has been conducting active research in the area of underwater sensor networks. UWSNs are fundamentally different from terrestrial sensor networks. The complexity of the aquatic environment and the sophistication of the underwater acoustic communication mechanism post grand challenges and require new research from the ground up.

Zheng’s research focuses on several critical design issues of underwater wireless sensor networks, including the design, modeling, analysis and evaluation of underwater acoustic networks and systems. For the past few years, he has published more than 15 technical papers at top international conferences and journals. A recent publication is selected as the spotlight paper for the January 2012 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He has also developed systems with hardware and software which provide valuable platforms and tools for the advances of underwater networks. Together with his colleagues, James won the best demo award in the fifth ACM International Workshop on UnderWater Networks (WUWNET’10).

Due to his expertise in the area, he has been invited to serve as a technical program committee (TPC) member and/or reviewer for many international conferences and journals. He served as the session chair of IEEE OCEANS conference on the topic for Marine Communications and Technology, the TPC member of CHINACOM in 2011, and the web chair of ACM WUWNET from 2010.

He has demonstrated excellent leadership in the UWSN lab. He has been taken the lead in many major projects of the UWSN lab. He contributes time in lab management and provides guidance to junior graduate students as well as undergraduate students. In summer 2010, he was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation, Northeast Alliance at University of Connecticut Summer Research Program for mentoring minority undergraduate students. He also led his team and conducted various field tests in the oceans from North America to Asia.

After finishing his PhD, he plans to continue his innovative research in UWSNs. In the mean time, he will keep receiving training from UCONN part-time MBA program to explore entrepreneurship. He hopes his research work will lead to revolutionary ocean technologies and his business training could help him to realize his dream of enabling the humankind to capitalize on the vast resources of the planet's seas.

Zheng is an IEEE student member, licensed boater, certified SCUBA diver and photography enthusiast.
